 | Suzuki Rotary RE-5 Part 1 of 2 Suzuki presented its first, and only, rotary engine powered motorcycle at the Tokyo Show in late 1973. The RE5, as the model was called, was Suzuki's technical flagship at the time and a fine motorcycle. The engine, originated from NSU in Germany, was smooth, quiet, powerful and had hardly any vibrations, thanks to its construction with no parts moving back-and-forth like the usual Otto engine. The rotary, or Wankel, engine has a number of benefits over standard engines including a lack of camshafts, intake and exhaust valves, and a reduced number of moving parts. Many manufacturers experimented with the engine type and some prototypes were presented in the early 70's but Suzuki was the only motorcycle manufacturer that used the rotary engine on a mass produced bike. Suzuki presented the engine sometimes as 1000cc, because some regulatory bodies de-rate the engine by doubling the chamber capacity. The actual cylinder capacity was 497 cc. The design of the RE5 was not as revolutionary as its engine. The instrument panel and tail light were contained in cylindrical shapes to play on the rotary theme, otherwise the bike looked a lot like the company's two-stroke flagship GT750. Also included was a special heat shield since the rotary engine design tended to make exhaust pipes hot enough to burn riders' legs. What happened?  | Suzuki RE5 Rotary Engine Motorcycle For Sale First of all, sorry about the wind noise in part of this video! Depending on the direction the camera is facing, the wind noise is pretty bad sometimes. This video is of my pristine, unrestored 1975 Suzuki RE5 rotary-engine motorcycle that I bought from the original owner in 1994. It is for sale now on eBay. Since its purchase, I have made a point to ride it a couple or three times a year, to keep everything working good. It was my favorite bike to take each year on the Toys-For-Tots run. A very unique bike, most people had never seen another one like it. It has that smooth, rotary-engine hum that is so famous, and starts instantly and drives so smooth you wouldn't know that the engine is running, except for that distinctive, throaty exhaust hummmm. It's a great bike, and I hate to sell it. They are really getting rare, and one in this condition that has been stored inside all its life is even more rare. The Suzuki RE5 with it's rotary engine is a very rare and highly collectable motorcycle, only about 120 of these were officially imported by Heron Suzuki. These machines can be seen occasionally in National Classic Motorcycle Shows but on this video you can actually experience riding one across the Brecon Becons in South Wales. You will notice the wild horses and sheep by the road, this can be dangerous to any motorcyclist as they are so unpredictable so the speed was kept to just below 70mph but did reach 80mph on one straight. Starting off through the gears, once top gear (5th) was selected it was never needed to change down as the RE5 engine has plenty of torque, at the end you hear the engine again as I finish the crossing, about seven minutes. 2010年08月11日再生回数 3774 |
