![]() | Bamboo Lappet Caterpillars Crawling on the Snow Lots of hairy caterpillars of the bamboo lappet moth (Euthrix albomaculata directa, family Lasiocampidae) were spotted on the virgin snow. Some were crawling slowly on the icy snow, while others were just sitting still (for sunbathing?). Don't touch them with your bare hands! Their toxic hairs can cause skin inflammation. They overwinter in the larval form, when they exclusively feed on evergreen leaves of Poaceae grass such as the bamboo. Early-December 2008 in Japan. picasaweb.google.co.jp

![]() | Black Variation of Bamboo Lappet Caterpillar in Winter A hairy caterpillar of the bamboo lappet moth (Euthrix albomaculata directa, family Lasiocampidae) crawling on the surface of deep snow (4 deg C). Mid-January 2009 in Japan. It was approx. 18 mm long and blacker than the standard colouration (light brown; see the video response for instance). This species is known to overwinter in the larval stage. I've got the impression that more blackish larvae were often found in midwinter. I wonder if they are just a variant population or caused by a seasonal change for the overwinter survival. (melanized to absorb the scarce sunlight?) Other possibility is that maybe black ones are just different species, the reed lappet moth (Euthrix potatoria bergmani, family Lasiocampidae).
