 | Hornets Fighting Over Tree Sap チャイロスズメバチvsオオスズメバチ＠樹液 A few workers of brown hornet (Vespa dybowskii, family Vespidae) feeding on the tree sap of oak (Quercus serrata, family Fagaceae). But they had to settle for the second class spot because the best position was occupied by the Japanese giant hornets (Vespa mandarinia japonica, family Vespidae). V. mandarinia is the biggest and the strongest among Japanese hornets. V. dybowskii was sometimes chased away even from the second spot. Mid-September 2010 in Japan. オオスズメバチが樹液を吸っているコナラの幹にはチャイロスズメバチも来て樹皮をかじっています。後からもう一匹飛来したのでチャイロは少なくとも2匹います。同じスズメバチ科でも二種の体格差は歴然としています。力関係でもオオスズメバチには負けるようで、樹液の一番よく出る穴はオオスズメバチが占領し、チャイロスズメバチは二番手、三番手の樹液ポイントに甘んじています。離れた位置で吸汁しているので平和ですが、ときどきオオスズメバチが威嚇するように飛んでいくとチャイロスズメバチは慌てて退散します。チャイロも身の程をわきまえているのか、喧嘩らしい喧嘩にはなりません。横取りした場所もオオスズメバチにとっては樹液の出が悪かったのか、元の場所に戻りました。ハエやムネアカオオアリも隙あらば樹液のおこぼれを狙っています。 2010年09月30日再生回数 1854 |
 | Drunk Hornet (Vespa crabro) 泥酔したモンスズメバチ A worker of the European hornet (Vespa crabro flavofasciata, family Vespidae) was found beside the ripe fruits of Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki, family Ebenaceae) on the roadside. It looked like she had passed out after drinking too much of fermented fruit juice. The intoxicated hornet couldn't stand up with her legs twitching. Late-September 2010 in Japan. picasaweb.google.com 道端に散乱した熟柿の横でモンスズメバチが仰向けにひっくり返っていました。脚が痙攣しており、全く歩けません。特に外傷は認められないので、近くで吸汁しているコガタスズメバチと争って負傷したのではなく、発酵した果汁を飲み過ぎて泥酔したものと思われます。（実際の吸汁シーンを見ていないので、寿命でただ弱っているだけかも。）保護して経過観察し、酔いが醒めて元気になることを確認しようか迷いました。しかし安全に持ち帰ることのできる採集容器をこの日は持参してなかったので断念。単眼の周囲が黒く、胸部の小楯板が茶褐色である点がモンスズメバチの特徴です。触角および腹部の体節をカウントすると♀と判明。一円玉と比較して割り出した体長～23mmから判断してワーカーだと思います。「泣きっ面の蜂」とはこんな感じでしょうか。 2010年10月03日再生回数 2223 |
 | Vespa analis Kingdom Chronicles #19 Social Parasite チャイロスズメバチvsコガタ女王 This episode reports one of the most significant and dramatic incidents in my amateurish field observation. The embryo nest of small hornet (Vespa analis insuraris, family Vespidae) was visited again by a queen of brown hornet (Vespa dybowskii, family Vespidae) with malicious intentions (see also episode#16). V. dybowskii is a notorious social parasite species. The queen of brown hornet is known to usurp a nest of other hornet species such as V. simillima and V. crabro, kill the host queen and make the host workers raise her offsprings (like in slavery). The foundress of V. analis happened to be present in the nest and she could manage to chase away the deadly intruder. I was so excited to witness the fight. The bottle-neck entrance of the V. analis' embryo nest may have been developed as a defensive architecture in the evolution to ward off the social parasite. But her majesty was so upset after the dangerous encounter that she irrationally chewed off the tip of the tubular envelope a little.  | Vespa analis Kingdom Chronicles #16 Ominous Guest チャイロスズメバチ女王の物色 A queen of brown hornet (Vespa dybowskii, family Vespidae) visited the embryo nest of small hornet (Vespa analis insuraris, family Vespidae) in the absence of the founding queen. This uninvited guest was far from innocent. Vespa dybowskii is a notorious social parasite which often usurps the colony of other hornet species (such as V. simillima and V. crabro). But the intruder could not find the nest entrance and eventually gave up. Probably the long tunnel entrance on the envelope might be V. analis' unique invention to deter the invasion by social parasites, since the embryo nests of host species (both V.simillima and V. crabo) have no such structure.  | サトキマダラヒカゲを襲うモンスズメバチ 撮影：2011年6月29日7時44分、B公園。前日、ノコギリクワガタをゲットしたコナラを帰る前にもう一度チェック。たくさんの樹液に集まる蝶と何種類かのスズメバチ（オオスズメバチ、モンスズメバチ、ヒメスズメバチ、コガタスズメバチ）がいた（記憶違いでいないのが入っているかも。ただ、ここではどの種も見られる）。 すると、スズメバチがチョウを襲う場面に遭遇。あんなの初めて見た。写真よりも動画だと思い、途中から撮った。映像を見ると、その翅から被害者はサトキマダラヒカゲの模様。加害者はモンスズメバチ。樹液に来ている蝶を襲うとは、ほんとにびっくりした。 2011年07月01日再生回数 1469 |

Soundtrack (audioswapped): "Hidden Beauty" by Sunburn In Cyprus This is part 2of2. part 1: www.youtube.com part 2: www.youtube.com コガタスズメバチの巣の残骸と一緒に採集した寄生蛾の幼虫を飼育していたのですが、なかなか成虫が羽化してくれません。成虫の出現期が夏らしいのでこのまま越冬するのだろうか、あるいは拾ったスズメバチの巣が実は人の手で駆除されたものだとしたら巣に残留した殺虫剤で寄生蛾も死んでしまったのだろうか、などと気を揉みました。しかしようやく羽化した成虫の姿を拝むことができました。この美麗な寄生蛾の正体はギンモンシマメイガと判明。 2009年09月12日再生回数 2417 |
