The Iraqi journalist, Muntadhar al-Zeidi, with Egypt-based al-Baghdadia television network, threw the shoes yelling out that "this is a farewell kiss from the Iraqi people, dog." Hitting someone with a sole of a shoe is to insult and debase another person by equating them with the dirt and filth on the bottom of a shoe. The event served as an end to the "Mission Accomplished" moment in May 2003, when President Bush appeared on the USS Abraham Lincoln, standing before a banner that said "Mission Accomplished," and praised the troops who had defeated the Iraqi government.
