 | Rover P6 3500S Startup & Rev Just a few quick clips I shot today of my recently acquired Rover P6 3500S, from 1975. It burst into life after standing for about 3 months and certainly wants to live (it was potentially going to be broken up!). I've not long had it - and it's going to need some work - but the powertrain is in great condition and it shouldn't take much to get it through an MOT. The car has the standard 3.5 litre (215ci) Rover V8, with twin SU carburettors. The only modifications to this car are SD1 cylinder heads, a 5-speed LT77 gearbox, Facet fuel pump and Luminition Ignition. Starts absolutely on the button, as you can see - even when cold it just needs a little choke and catches instantly, settling into a steady idle. It's (noise-wise) refined to say the least - but it does have quite a nice muted burble and is very smooth. A set of aftermarket filters and some exhaust changes would have it sounding like a completely different beast - but that's not the priority at the moment. Covered 4000 miles in the last 16 months,last year 1000 mile plus trip to Burgundy was fab.Cruises down French Autoroutes 80 mph plus all day. Quality car,maybe the last great old school Rover before the company went steadily down hill selling poor quality tat (City Rover made in India) and finally bankrupt,shame! Well engineered before Rover name was ruined by poor management,these first appeared in about 1962 with a Gasturbine Prototype! Safe car with all round disc brakes,built in crumple zones,monocoque construction,an early ton up executive cruiser and well loved by the UK Police Force as a fast response interceptor (Just watch the old TV series like the "Sweeney" or more recenly" Life on Mars"). This one is used regularly as a second car,handles well,fine in modern day traffic conditions,why creep along in an Austin when you can waft past in one of these.More P6s on the road than the later SD1,better quality materials have helped these stand the test of time.
