	Bishamonten (毘沙門天), or Tamonten (多聞天)  "Japan, circa 1250 Wood, inlaid crystal eyes, traces of polychromy and gilding "In the Buddhist pantheon, Bishamonten is the Guardian King of the North. He is always dressed in armor, the better to vanquish evil. He is usually shown holding a spear or trident in one hand and a miniature stupa or pagoda in the other. This Bishamonten is from the middle of the thirteenth century, c. 1250 AD, at the height of the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The knit brows and strong confident expression of the Bishamonten contrast wonderfully with the long-suffering yet humorous expression on the face of the vanquished demon beneath his feet."
