![]() | Dunhuang: Mogao Cave 249 (敦煌: 莫高窟249) The ancient man-made Mogao Caves along China's silk road contain over 1000 years' worth of invaluable buddhist painting and sculpture. Not only does this cave (#249) stand out because the murals contain some of the earliest depictions of Ashura, Fujin and Raijin, but in #249 they are all depicted together for perhaps the first time in history (for example, there are two very similar Raijin depictions in Cave #285, but no images of Ashura or Fujin are found in those murals). Doubtless, the sculptural inspiration for the physiology and attributes of some of Japan's most well known Buddhist dieties (found at the Kofukuji and the Sanjusangendo) can be traced back to these very caves, thousands of miles and centuries away from Kyoto and Nara.

![]() | Dunhuang: Mogao Cave 194 (敦煌: 莫高窟194) The ancient man-made Mogao Caves along China's silk road contain over 1000 years' worth of invaluable buddhist painting and sculpture. Though the Mogao Grottoes are primarily known for their wall and ceiling murals, the strength of this particular cave (194) is its sculpture. Two of the most striking sculptures are the Kongorikishi (or Nio) guardians. Though sculpted around 600 AD (which easily pre-dates Japan's earliest extant freestanding Nio at the Horyu-ji), these two Benevolent Kings bear an amazing resemblance in presence and detail to the life-size Nio pair sculpted by the Jokei from Japan's Kamakura Era (which can today be found within the Kofukuji's Treasure Hall in Nara). Jokei was a devout student and quite possibly a blood relative of the founders of the Kei School (慶派), which became famous for its brave and exciting departure from traditional, more static Nara Era sculpture (this departure was strongly influenced by the art of China's T'ang Dyansty from previous centuries). Life-size Nio Guardians from ancient Japan are extremely rare (two more famous life-sized Nio can be found in Kyoto's Sanjusangendo). Due to the extravagant outdoor gates which usually sheltered Japan's Nio sculptures, Kongorikishi were nearly always sculpted as gargantuan, sometimes colossal but always imposing figures. Jokei's Nio (as well as Cave 194's) are eye-level, which conjures a more engaging and personal, challenging emotion. The scale of many sculptures in the Mogao Caves were ... 2010年12月18日再生回数 1740 |
