 | McLaren MP4-12C Launch at Autosport 2011 Performance Direct Motoring News were at the launch of the eagerly awaited McLaren MP4-12C at Autosport International 2011. For a very long time McLaren held the record for producing the fastest production car in the world with the McLaren F1 which was designed and built in it's entirety by the engineering team at McLaren. Although the firm has dipped it's spanners in a range of motoring projects since, the McLaren MP4-12C is the first car since that is ALL McLaren. Carbon fibre has been used liberally throughout the design to minimise weight and maximise power to weight ratio. Unlike it's predecessor, the F1 which had a single seat up front, the MP4-12C has a more traditional two seats side by side configuration. The engine is a 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8 and is the first engine that McLaren have designed, although they partnered with Ricardo and the engine design is based upon the Nissan VRH35 Racing engine used at Le Mans. Between the wheels and the engine sits a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox which has coined the new phrase "seamless shift gearbox" (SSG). As you can see from the stats below the McLaren MP4-12C looks a very exciting proposition.
