Ti Lung stars as "Thief Master" Chu Liu-hsiang, a high-living swordsman who travels around on his own private boat attended by three beautiful female "students" referred to somewhat indelicately in the new English subtitles as "the babes." When Chu is accused of murder by a female fighter (Nora Miao) from the Palace of Magic Water, he has to find out who has killed three clan leaders and sent out letters accusing him of the deeds. The investigation takes him to a number of different towns and puts him in conflict with several other factions. A mysterious killer in red stalks him, killing off those who give him information. An enigmatic woman in purple known by three painted portraits of her also figures in the investigation, as does a flashback telling us the fate of a Japanese ninja who'd come to China and his two children. From 1976 on, a shortlist of Gu Long stories Chor Yuen brought to screen included Full Moon Scimitar, The Jade Tiger, The Magic Blade, The Proud Twins, and Death Duel, quite a few of which would feature star of the day Ti Lung. This iron triangle of Chor Yuen, Ti Lung, and Gu Long also produced a very well-received series of Sentimental Swordsman films. Perils of the Sentimental Swordsman, released in 1982, revolves around the adventures of dashing wandering swordsman Chu Liuxiang (Chor Lau Heung). This film brings Ti Lung's Chu to the eerie mountaintop Ghostly Village, where he attempts to infiltrate a notorious gang of outlaws. Liu Bang was originally a general of Chu but later on rebelled along with the generals Han Xin and Ying Bu. At first Xiang Yu was winning but he dicided to split the empire since Liu Bang was his sworn brother. But upon hearing Han Xins reinforcements, Liu Bang attacked the Chu army on their return to their homeland. Xiang Yu retreated to Wujiang (烏江; present-day He County, Chaohu City, Anhui province) and the ferryman at the ford prepared a boat for him to cross the river, strongly encouraging him to do so because Xiang still had the support of the people from his homeland in the south. Xiang said that he was too ashamed to return home and face the folks because none of the first 8000 men from Jiangdong who followed him on his conquests managed to survive. He refused to cross and ordered his remaining men to dismount, asking the ferryman to take his beloved war horse Zhui (騅) back home. Xiang Yu then led his men to attack the Han soldiers for one last time. Xiang managed to kill dozens of enemies but he suffered grave wounds and all his 26 men perished.
