![]() | Free Trip to Hawaii: The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show - Season 3, Episode 1 (1952) DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Elvia Allman (September 19, 1904; Enochville, North Carolina -- March 6, 1992; Santa Monica, California) was a character actress and voice over performer in Hollywood films and television programs for over 50 years. She is best remembered for her semi-regular roles on The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction and for being the voice of Walt Disney's Clarabelle Cow. Her mark in TV history is also insured by her memorable performance as the stern, no-nonsense boss in the classic I Love Lucy "Candy Factory" episode, "Job Switching" ("If one piece of candy goes by on the conveyor belt without being wrapped, you're fired!). Allman began her radio career in early 1926 at KHJ in Los Angeles as a programme arranger and children's story reader, and later as a singer. The Los Angeles Times of the day praises her abilities as a dialectician. It was there she met her first husband, musician Wesley B. Tourtellotte, in 1930. They divorced within several years. New York beckoned in 1933, where she did a 15-minute network programme of songs. On Oct. 30, 1933, the Times announced she was moving to KNX on a 15-minute programme to be heard Tuesdays and Thursday evenings. What was supposed to be a long-term contract ended March 3, 1935. Allman's first big network radio success was on the Blue Monday Jamboree where she portrated beauty expert Auntie MacCasser, high society matron Octavia Smith-Whiffen, and home economist Pansy Pennypincher. She made ... 2011年06月23日再生回数 14552 |

![]() | Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Soldiers: WW2 Treatment Documentary - Let There Be Light (1948) DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Let There Be Light is a 1946 American documentary film directed by John Huston. The film, commissioned by the United States Army Signal Corps, was the final entry in a John Huston trilogy of films produced at the request of the US Government. This documentary film follows 75 US soldiers who have sustained debilitating emotional trauma and depression. A series of scenes chronicle their entry into a psychiatric hospital, their treatment and eventual recovery. Some of the treatments involved then-new drugs and hypnosis, and the impression was given of miraculous cures, though the narration says that there will be continuing psychiatric care. Much of the filming was done at Edgewood State Hospital, Deer Park, Long Island, New York which between 1944 and 1946 was part of Mason General Hospital, a psychiatric hospital run by the United States War Department named for an Army doctor and general. The film was controversial in its portrayal of shell-shocked soldiers from the war. "Twenty percent of our army casualties", the narrator says, "suffered psychoneurotic symptoms: a sense of impending disaster, hopelessness, fear, and isolation." Apparently due to the potentially demoralizing effects the film might have on recruitment, it was subsequently banned by the Army after its production, although some pirated copies had been made. Military police once confiscated a print Huston was about to show friends at the Museum of Modern Art. The Army ... 2011年08月03日再生回数 36120 |
![]() | Trial at Nuremberg: US High Commissioner Edition (Documentary Movie) DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Nuremberg Palace of Justice (germ. Justizpalast) is a building complex in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany. It was constructed from 1909 to 1916 and houses the appellate court Nuremberg (Oberlandesgericht), the regional court Nuremberg-Fürth (Landgericht), the local court Nuremberg (Amtsgericht) and the public prosecutor's office Nuremberg-Fürth (Staatsanwaltschaft). The building was the location of the Nuremberg Trials that were held in 1945-1949 after World War II for the main Nazi Germany personalities presumed to be still alive. Colonel Burton C. Andrus was both the commandant of Nuremberg Prison (where the prisoners were kept) and Military Officer commanding the garrison protecting the Palace. Among the indicted who made their appearance were Hermann Göring (suicide by potassium cyanide), Rudolf Hess (life internment), Franz von Papen (Vice-Chancellor under Hitler, acquitted), Arthur Seyss-Inquart (Austrian Chancellor, Nazi Commissioner, hanged) and Joachim von Ribbentrop (Foreign Minister, hanged). Göring was not hanged as sentenced, but committed suicide by taking a cyanide pill smuggled into his cell. His suicide note stated that "being hanged is not appropriate for a man of [his] status". The trials took place in courtroom number 600, situated in the eastern wing of the Palace of Justice. The courtroom is still used, especially for murder trials. At the end of the Nuremberg Trials the courtroom was refurbished, and is ... 2011年03月13日再生回数 46166 |
