 | Las Vegas Strip at night 2011: Luxor, MGM Grand, New York, Mandalay Bay Casinos All the beautiful casinos on the Southern end of the Las Vegas Strip. MGM Grand, the New York New York, the Excalibur, the magnificient Mandalay bay and finally Luxor. Luxor is the second largest hotel in Las Vegas (the largest being the MGM Grand Las Vegas) and the third largest in the world. We were there on the opening week end in 1993. When the resort opened, it featured the Nile River Tour which was a river ride that carried guests to different parts of the pyramid and passed by pieces of ancient artwork on a river that encircled the casino. The casino also featured King Tut's Tomb and Museum, a duplicate of King Tutankhamen's tomb as found in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor, Egypt. In July 2007, owner MGM Resorts International announced plans to thoroughly renovate the Luxor, spending $300 million to remodel 80 percent of Luxor's public areas, removing much of the ancient Egyptian theme and replacing it with more adult-oriented and modern lounges, restaurants and clubs. The laser show in front of the Sphinx and the laser beam shooting out of the Sphinx eyes were phenomenal, I had made movie footages of the laser shows but they were so low res that it was not worth attaching to this high definition video. Software designer John LeSieur recognized those frustrations while watching his 6-year old grandson, Zackary try and navigate the Web. LeSieur knew he could help. So he had his company, People CD Inc. design the Zac Browser, an interface geared specifically towards autistic children. The Zac Browser greatly simplifies the Web. It seals off most adult-oriented sites and presents a hand-picked slate of choices from free, public Web sites. While other programs offer a "walled garden" approach to the Web, LeSieur's browser aims to go further: It essentially takes over the computer and reduces the controls available. And for children like Zackary, setting those limits and narrowing the focus could help open up a world of possibilities. I grew more enraged when I or other children would ask our parents or caregivers exactly what was bad about these words, as we would invariably receive some absurd rationale. "Swearing is evidence of a lacking vocabulary" we'd be told, as though removing certain words from our vocabulary would somehow enlarge it. "My ears are not garbage cans", some moralistic old hen once told me. Being ten, I wasn't able to explain to the woman that simply repeating her belief that these words were garbage did not qualify why she thought they were garbage. All I could do was fume at the rampant and socially endorsed idiocy. Of course, at this point, I'm in the majority. As broadcasters and publishers gradually become more lax on what constitutes a "swear word", the very notion becomes more and more widely recognized as the goofy anachronism that it is. Or so one might think. This kind of moronic moral posturing has actually survived the raunchy onslaught of radio shock jocks and adult-oriented cartoons by slightly altering itself. Rather than a compulsion to display some shocked and appalled knee-jerk reaction to words like shit and fuck, many are compelled to react in exactly the same fashion to words like nigger and faggot.
