Radioactive Americium 241Radioactive Americium 241
this is a video of me removing the radioactive button out of a smoke detector. i also do a simple experiment showing the decay of the atom.

a closer look at americium 241 from a smoke detectora closer look at americium 241 from a smoke detector
in this video, i disassembled a smoke detector to show you the properties of americium 241, the second nuclide in the neptunium decay chain. yeah i know i used some 'wrong' words, ie. could've used more fitting words to describe stuff at times, but i did this freestyle and being rather tired - hope you like it anyway, even with the mobile phone annoyances inbetween, too. ;-) also, there's four major decay chains, but only three naturally radioactive ones - neptunium is the artifical one. sorry about that!

LFTR vs Nuclear Waste - Plutonium, americium, curium (transuranics) can be fissioned / disposedLFTR vs Nuclear Waste - Plutonium, americium, curium (transuranics) can be fissioned / disposed
Sign the petition! ThoriumPetition.com - LFTR does not produce transuranic waste. It burns up essentially all of the fuel because we don't remove fuel from the reactor until it's a fission product. It is these transuranics like plutonium, americium & curium which present the biggest challenge to nuclear waste disposal. They have moderate half-lives (neither decay quickly nor low levels of radiation) and have complicated decay chains. All of today's pressurized water reactors (every commercial reactor operating in North America) use less than 1% of the energy stored in the nuclear fuel. This is why the spent fuel rods are difficult to manage. LFTR can consume almost all of its fuel. This big increase in efficiency means less nuclear waste to deal with. And because LFTR (Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor) uses LIQUID fuel, it is far easier to partition the "waste" to extract valuable by-products, such as medical isotopes for cancer treatment.

Then the two of you need to compare notes. Again take a look at the height above sea level and see if the higher you go the better the results. The neutrinos like to mimic other particles. If you have three of them that alpha decay each and every particle neutrino will mimic that which is closest to them. By splitting them into 4 quarks and 7 protons and 7 neutrons each then accelerate the excited neutrino mixture to see what speeds you get. I would think it will go faster than the speed of light and can it possibly reach 5g in speed with the right calculations applied to it? You decide.... Here's the formula for ...

Radioactive Smoke Detector -- Americium 241Radioactive Smoke Detector -- Americium 241
This video shows very low levels of radioactivity that escape from an ionization-type smoke detector that contains 0.9 microcuries of radioactive americium 241 (according to the label). A simple geiger counter with a pancake probe is used for the measurements. If you look at other YouTube videos, you can see that the tiny americium source is intensely radioactive -- perhaps even too radioactive to be measured with this type of geiger counter, since it would overwhelm the geiger tube. Only a tiny fraction of that radioactivity passes through the case and escapes from the smoke detector. I did not disassemble the smoke detector, since it had to go back up on the ceiling after the video. Notes: This is a plug-in type smoke detector, with battery backup. The battery was removed for this video, since the smoke detector complains about being unplugged.

Radioactive Americium 241: high alpha counts (cpm) is not high gamma (µSv) levelRadioactive Americium 241: high alpha counts (cpm) is not high gamma (µSv) level
Using Radalert Inspector to measure alpha and gamma activity of two small Americium 241 sources. It is important to set the counter's switch to the right position (cpm/cps), otherwise erroneous high µSv readings are obtained since the GM counter translates the alpha particle hits into a gamma radiation level. Alpha's only travel a few centimeters in air and don't penetrate the skin. However, if the contents of this alpha source would have been swallowed or inhaled the indicated radiation level would be, on the opposite, a large underestimation of true exposure due to the high energy of the alpha particles (high Q): estimated absorbed dose would be around 12 mSv/hr x 20 = 240 mGy/hr. Alpha's from external sources should be measured using the counter's cpm or cps position. Blocking the alpha's with a piece of paper gives the opportunity to estimate the source's gamma radiation level. Recorded using Panasonic HDC-TM300 true HD camcorder. AmericiumAmericium
This is a modern take on the Spinthariscope. I removed the lens from a web cam, so that the video sensor chip was exposed. I then placed an Americium sample from a smoke detector a couple millimeters from the sensor, and wrapped the whole thing in aluminum foil. The lines you see are heat noise. The single pixel sparkles are alpha particles (helium nuclei from radioactive decay) hitting the sensor. You can actually see (and make videos of) radioactive decay, in a few minutes with inexpensive off-the-shelf parts. Try it at 720p and full screen for the best effect.
