Der Verlorene part 1Der Verlorene part 1
Looking thin and drawn, the 47-year-old Lorre initially emerges, almost unnoticed, from a railroad crossing, after a locomotive passes (as it will three times throughout the film, like fate on rails). Dr. Rothe is an urbane and confident physician making the rounds in a refugee camp, ministering to his patients until a ghost from his past unpacks repressed crimes and tormented memories, destabilising his ordinary reality with film noir doubt. As darkly revelatory flashbacks expose to what murderous depths this detached research scientist fell (while enabled and protected by the intelligence service). I had never met a man with this radiation, this aura. - Actress Gisela Trowe on Peter Lorre This 10 part presentation is shown without subtitles as it was originally meant for the screen in Germany. Peter Lorre - Displaced Person (1/7)Peter Lorre - Displaced Person (1/7)
This is a documentary about the making of Peter Lorre's only film as a director, 'Der Verlorene'. If you can survive the passages with the flabby film historian who goes on and on with (at times) unimportant factual trivia, this documentary is well worth watching thanks to the sometimes funny and consistently witty commentary of the exuberant and colourful Gisela Trowe, who shares her reminiscences of working on this film with Peter Lorre. **************************************** A million thanks to my dear Pip, for his invaluable help with the translation. I owe you a thousand Easter chocolate bunnies, babe ;-)

Peter Lorre - Displaced Person (4/7)Peter Lorre - Displaced Person (4/7)
Okay fellow Peterites, here's the second half of the documentary. You have the amazing mRsBedLO to thank for this, for she transcribed the entire second half of the film for me! (Herzlichen Dank, M!) Again, the flamboyant Mrs Trowe really makes this worth watching (although, to be fair, the two scholarly nerds raise an interesting point or two, on occasion) Translation (arduous) & subbing (time-consuming) by yours truly. Enjoy! I need an aspirin :D Note: There's a subtitle missing, at around 07:10, regarding what happened to Karl John: he broke a vertebrae or something when coming back from the Hamburg Press Ball in a car accident.
