![]() | Svengali (1931) John Barrymore, Warner Brothers Horror Drama Horror Full Movie Svengali (1931) is a drama/horror film starring John Barrymore, Marian Marsh, and Bramwell Fletcher, directed by Archie Mayo, written by J. Grubb Alexander, and released by Warner Brothers. It is based on the gothic horror novel Trilby (1894) by George du Maurier. The film was originally released on May 22, 1931. Warner Brothers was so pleased by the box office on this film that the studio hurriedly reteamed Barrymore and Marsh for another horror film The Mad Genius, released on November 7, 1931. The ending of the novel is changed in this film to a highly dramatic one by having Trilby die after Svengali is stricken with a fatal heart attack, instead of dying of a mysterious illness a few days later. She faints after he collapses in the stage box, but Svengali revives long enough to gasp, "Oh God, grant me in death what you denied me in life- the woman I love". Trilby then dies, followed by Svengali. In the film Billee survives. ![]() | Praying in the Church of Jazz - McLean / Dean Jazz, Period. - Praying in the Church of Jazz "Blue Fantasy" by Al McLean Al McLean - Saxophone Kevin Dean - Trumpet Mike Rud - Guitar Morgan Moore - Bass Recorded February 5, 2011 at The House of Elliot, Montreal. In this installment of Jazz, Period., some of Montreal's best musicians can be found in "The House of Elliot", a converted church in Montreal. Tastefully equipped with a generous selection of collectible gear, the studio's secret weapon is its ambiance, which provokes a sort of musical reverence in all who set foot. Complete with a ceiling mounted hymn bell, the decommissioned church has a wonderful acoustic fingerprint. The reverberant sanctuary is taut and alert, offering subtly textured canvas for the players to paint on. Just the right amount of tooth to catch the brush... This piece by saxophonist Al McLean features a hypnotic, dirge-like melody, sparse phrasing drifts intriguingly across an even pedal thumped out by Morgan Moore. The tight head devolves into a rollicking blues blowing section, and the players, in turn, offer testament. Especially of note is Mike Rud's guitar work on this piece. Superlative. A gem of a solo, hearkening Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis' best work. All in attendance please rise and join us in saying... Amen! Al McLean can be heard regularly in Montreal's Jazz venues, and is a sought after saxophone repair man. The reverberant sanctuary is taut and alert, offering subtly textured canvas for the players to paint on. Just the right amount of tooth to catch the brush... This piece by trumpeter Kevin Dean is a refreshing latin treatment of what is normally a ballad. 'Lille Venn', or 'Little Friend' is a Norwegian term of endearment for pets and small children. The tune is wholly endearing, with a beautiful, earnest mood and delivery. Of special note, is the Stan Getz-esque tone of McLean's 1924 Martin tenor sax, and the unique timbre of the 19th Century John Heald cornet in Dean's hands. Both players breathe new life into these period horns. This piece by trumpeter Kevin Dean was originally composed for an NFB (National Film Board of Canada) documentary titled, "A Time There Was; Stories From the Last Days of Kenya Colony", directed by Don McWilliams. The piece is a rich tango, laden with the pathos normally associated with the Argentinian dance. The bridge culminates in a bristling dissonant interval, a minor second, which is clearly embraced by all of the players. Great solos by all, of special note is the rare Conn C soprano sax in Al McLean's hands, and the impromptu accompaniment on tambourine. Bravo gentlemen!
