Composer Sanford Green, Part 3Composer Sanford Green, Part 3
Some of the many wonderful songs written by Sanford Green, including 'Tappin' on Wood' sung by Vicki Joyce, a snappy dance by Hal Le Roy and the 'Goodnight Waltz' sung by Bernice Claire. That's Toby Wing with Hal in the number 'Top Hat On The Moon.' His collaborators included lyricists Jack Manus, Edward Heyman, Irving Kahal and Cliff Hess. Second part of a three-part tribute to composer/conductor Sanford Green (1914-2007), who wrote music for more than 35 films in the 1930s. Hal Le Roy, Sylvia Froos, June Allyson, Dorothy Dare, Georgie Price, Mitzi Mayfair, Bernice Claire and the Preisser Sisters are but a few of the stars that sang his songs. He died August 26, 2007 at age 93, and a memorial mass was held Tuesday, September 4 at St. Paul The Apostle RC Church in Manhattan. At the age of nineteen he became a staff composer for the short subjects division of a major studio, located in the old Vitagraph Studios on Avenue M in Brooklyn. He composed songs for more than 35 musical short subjects between 1934 and 1937. He worked as an arranger and musical director all his life, and has a son who is a theater conductor. Here are some of Sanford Greens film songs as they were originally performed.

Ende of the TrailEnde of the Trail
Bernice Ende, Honor, and Claire- long riders. I have the indescribable honor of knowing Bernice Ende quite well as she was my classical ballet teacher many long years ago. She has a heart of gold like none other. Good luck to you as you continue on your journey!

"With a Song in My Heart" (Leslie Hutchinson, 1930)"With a Song in My Heart" (Leslie Hutchinson, 1930)
From Rodgers & Hart's "Spring is Here", this song became an enormous hit instantly and was recorded by many of that vibrant era's finest artists--here's Leslie "Hutch" Hutchinson superb solo performance. Notes on the song follow the lyrics: WITH A SONG IN MY HEART Though I know that we meet ev'ry night and we couldn't have change since the last time, to my joy and delight, it's a new kind of love at first sight. Though it's you and it's I all the time ev'ry meeting's marvelous pastime. You're increasingly sweet, so whenever we happened to met I greet you ... With a song in my heart I behold your adorable face. Just a song at the start but it soon is a hymn to your grace. When the music swells I'm touching you hand It tells that your're standing near, and .. At the sound of your voice heaven opens his portals to me. Can I help but rejoice that a song such as ours came to be? But I always knew I would live life through with a song in my heart for you. With a song in my heart I behold your adorable face. Just a song at the start but it soon is a hymn to your grace. When the music swells I'm touching you hand It tells that your're standing near, and .. CONNIE FRANCIS: "WITH A SONG IN MY HEART" (1964) - LIVE!CONNIE FRANCIS: "WITH A SONG IN MY HEART" (1964) - LIVE!
This is a wonderful performance by Connie - I'm just sorry that I wasn't able to improve the sound and picture as much as I would like. It is a very bad "copy of a copy of a copy." But I still wanted to share it with Connie's fans. This is another one of those fabulous TV clips that we all hope will be restored and issued in HD on a DVD one day. I apologize for the choppy soundtrack. But it is all I had to work with, so I enhanced it as much as possible - but small pieces of the track were simply missing and couldn't be fixed on my computer. I love the backdrop on the set of this performance. It's the "logo" of the Conga Room at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas, where Connie performed every year throughout the 1960s. The logo appeared on the menus, table tents, etc. "With a Song in My Heart" is a show tune from the 1929 Rodgers and Hart musical Spring is Here. In the original Broadway production it was introduced by John Hundley and Lillian Taiz. The following year, it was sung in the Hollywood musical version of that show by Bernice Claire and Frank Albertson. It was also featured in several films, including "With A Song in My Heart" in 1952, starring Susan Hayward.
