 | Business Intelligence www.LearnDataVault.com In this video Dan goes over some Business Intelligence best practices such as why it's a bad idea to add business rules to any Data Warehouse loading routines. The Data Vault methodology explicitly asks you not to do this. The core Data Vault methodology forces you to move "soft" business rules downstream of the Data Warehouse. There are specific reasons for this. 1. Longevity - The data remains exactly the way in came into the Data Warehouse and is a true representation of the facts at a point in time. This basically lasts forever, because "soft" business rules are not applied to this data set. 2. Audit and Compliance - The Data Vault methodology of implementation Data Warehouse dictates that all data in the Data Warehouse must be fully compliant and ready for audit. In fact, you should be able to re-create the source data at any point in time using just the data from the Data Warehouse. If you can do that, your Data Warehouse will pass every possible audit and compliance requirement. This is especially important for any industries with regulatory bodies. 3. Legal - In the US and also in certain parts of the EU, there are legal issues when you change data. While this ties into audit and compliance, the penalties are much higher. So, you could potentially be breaking the law by re-stating the data via soft business rules. 4. Complexity - Loading the Data Warehouse can be a complex task with many movable parts.
