Zarah Leander - Ich steh' im Regen/Il pleut sans trêveZarah Leander - Ich steh' im Regen/Il pleut sans trêve
Zarah Leander's French version of "Ich steh'im Regen" (I'm standing in the rain) from the 1937 movie "Zu neuen Ufern" (To new shores). This was her first movie for UFA directed by Detlef Sierck, who would become known in Hollywood as Douglas Sirk. The movie tells the story of Gloria Vane, a singer in 19th century England, who takes the blame for cheque fraud commited by her lover... She is convicted and sent to Parmatta in Australia... There, after a lot of drama, she finds love in the arms of a handsome farmer... The arrangement of the French version is much closer to the movie version than the recorded German and Swedish versions. Slide show of Zarah Leander and co-stars Willy Birgel, Viktor Staal and Carola Höhn... See video response for the Swedish version. Enjoy! All pictures and images, except the "Pour Vous"-cover from personal collection.

Der Wind hat mir ein Lied erzählt - Eric Helgar & Adalbert Lutter & Zarah Leander!(1937)Der Wind hat mir ein Lied erzählt - Eric Helgar & Adalbert Lutter & Zarah Leander!(1937)
Eric Helgar and Adalbert Lutter and his orchestra bring their version of the sultry tango-habanera "Der Wind hat mir ein Lied erzählt" from the 1937 melodrama "La Habanera". This movie of course starred Zarah Leander and was directed by Detlev Sierck who, in Hollywood, became Douglas Sirk, the master of melodrama... The song went around the world and was recorded by Zarah Leander in German, Swedish and French but also by singers such as Damia (in French), Greta Keller and many others... I really like this version by Lutter and Helgar, as I find it very reflective of the movie's exotic atmosphere... About the record : Telefunken A2831/22622 The video is a selection of scenes from the movie, giving an impression of what the movie is about. You will see Zarah Leander? as Astree Sternhjelm, a Swedish woman who falls madly in love while visiting a tropical island... At her side you will see Ferdinand Marian (as Don Pedro de Avila, the husbands she grows to resent), Karl Martell (as Dr. Sven Nagel an old friend who saves her) and Michael Domburg-Schulz (her son). Enjoy! PLEASE SELECT "WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY" for the best Video/Audio qualty as this is an MPEG-file. Zarah Leander - Tiefe Sehnsucht ("Zu neuen Ufern"-1937)Zarah Leander - Tiefe Sehnsucht ("Zu neuen Ufern"-1937)
A further song composed by Ralph Benatzky and sung by Zarah Leander in her first UFA movie "Zu neuen Ufern" (To new shores). The song was one of Benatzky's earlier compositions, originally known as "Sehnsucht" that was re-used for the movie and subsequently became known as "Tiefe Sehnsucht". The movie was directed by Douglas Sirk (as Detlev Sierck). Thanks to Jerzy for the info on this song. The song will be presented in 4 versions : the original German version, the French and Swedish versions and the 1957 version. Enjoy. All pictures/images from personal collection.

Kurt Weill - Der Silbersee (1/10)Kurt Weill - Der Silbersee (1/10)
Kurt Weill (1900-1950) Der Silbersee (The Silver Lake) 1933 1. Ouvertüre (2:55) 2. Nr. 1 Gräbst du? (Erster & zweiter Bursche) (7:40) 3. Nr. 2. Wir tragen den Hunger (Vier Burschen) Erster Bursche - Paul Whelan Zweiter Bursche - Gidon Saks Dritter Bursche - Stephen Alder Vierter Bursche - Andrew Weale London Sinfonietta conducted by Markus Stenz Der Silbersee was premiered on 18 February 1933 simultaneously at the Altes Theater in Leipzig, the Stadttheater in Erfurt and the Stadttheater in Magdeburg, just 3 weeks after the Nazi Party's Machtergreifung on 30 January 1933. It was directed by Detlev Sierck and conducted by Gustav Brecher (Leipzig). It was the artists' last production in the Weimar Republic before they were forced to emigrate and it was banned on 4 March 1933 by the Nazis after having been performed 16 times. Even though the piece is based on a play and most of the action is transmitted by the spoken word, the elaboration of the piece by Weill requires skilled singers and musicians for a medium-sized orchestra. Similarly to his other works, Weill uses a broad variety of elements such as the cantata, instrumental interruptions, moritate, and songs. It questions the limitations of the genres. As a result, the Nazis labelled the work not only degenerated but a "musical bastard". Due to these characteristics it has not until recently become established in postwar theater nor on opera stages. It still lacks an appropriate framework to be performed within. One day ...
