EDSAC 1951EDSAC 1951
The work flow of writing an EDSAC computer programme, generating the programme paper tape, and the execution of the program are presented with narration. If ever there was a compelling case for the creation of assemblers, compilers, and automated batch processing systems, this video is it.

The EDSAC Replica Project -- Computer Conservation in the UKThe EDSAC Replica Project -- Computer Conservation in the UK
[Recorded: May 11, 2011] "Recreating a fully functioning EDSAC computer is quite a challenge, but our experience in rebuilding the Colossus computer gives us confidence and insight." - Kevin Murrell, Director and Trustee, The National Museum of Computing The Computer History Museum is very pleased to welcome Kevin Murrell to our stage for a lecture about computer conservation in the United Kingdom. Mr. Murrell provides an overview of the British Computer Society's Computer Conservation Society (CCS) and its restoration projects, including the EDSAC replica project, and the restoration of the Harwell Dekatron computer. The CCS has a twenty-year track record in successfully recreating pioneering computers. The Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator (EDSAC) was a general-purpose research tool at Cambridge University and also led directly to the first business computer. It is planned to recreate EDSAC in full public view at The National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park. The project, which is expected to take three to four years, is being funded by a consortium led by computing entrepreneur, Hermann Hauser. EDSAC Facts: • EDSAC was based on the ideas of John von Neumann and others who in 1945 suggested that the future of computing lay in computers which could store sets of instructions (programs) as well as data. • EDSAC was over two meters high and occupied a ground area of four meters by five meters. • Its 3000+ vacuum tubes used as logic were arranged on 12 ...

Edsac (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator in 1949) and OXO (Tic-Tac-Toe game in 1952)Edsac (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator in 1949) and OXO (Tic-Tac-Toe game in 1952)
The world's first stored-program computer to operate a regular computing service built in 1949. The only you can really play is tic-tac-toe. All others does the mathematical calculations such as recipricals, TPK, and others. I couldn't get it to calculate squares or cubes. At least I got it to demonstrate OXO, the Tic-Tac-Toe Game made for this machine in 1952. Probably the only game for this machine. More of a basic computer game than a video game since it did not use video signals. Emulation is only 99% accurate. You Can read more about it right here: www.dcs.warwick.ac.uk Source: www.pong-story.com You can also download the emulator at that same link as well. Note: I put this in HD so text can be clearly read. Recorder: Camtasia Studio Editor: Virtual Dub Encoder: Avisynth+MeGui.

Adding 4 Numbers On The EDSACAdding 4 Numbers On The EDSAC
Code runs on the EDSAC simulator. The values 64, 32, 16, and 8 (hard-coded) are added together and printed on the teletype.

OXOOXO
Gameplay of what is considered to be the first digital computer game ever: OXO, a version of Noughts and Crosses for the early EDSAC computer built at the University of Cambridge. Video is taken from the EdsacPC emulator running the original game code by Alexander S. Douglas, written in 1952. The text output in the top right would have been printed on paper by a teleprinter. User input was handled with a rotary dial like the one displayed to the bottom right. The emulation is faster than the program would have run on the original EDSAC, the clock above the dial shows how long the calculations (and the loading time in particular) would have taken on an original system. The display to the top left is a CRT with 35x16 pixels, directly displaying the state of one of the mercury delay line memories. The memory is manipulated so that the CRT displays the playing field and the player moves. The second player is controlled by the EDSAC itself, and is programmed to win whenever possible. Search the web: "EdsacPC" to download the emulator with a lot of example programs, including OXO. "EDSAC99" for a page by the University of Cambridge with lots of historical information and photographs on the EDSAC computer.
