[Recorded: 1996] Part 1 of 2 The Dawn of Electronic Computing 1935 1945 Computer pioneer Gordon Bell hosts this two-part program on the evolution of electronic computing from its pre-World War II origins through the development of the first commercial computers. His narration traces the development of the stored program computer architecture which remains the foundation of todays modern computers. In Part 1 The builders of the first five computer machines: the Bell Labs Model 1, the Zuse Z1-3, the Atanasoff-Berry Computer, the Harvard Mark 1 and the IBM SSEC tell their stories.

[Recorded: 1996] Part 2 of 2 The First Computers, 1946 - 1950 Computer pioneer Gordon Bell hosts this two-part program on the evolution of electronic computing from its pre-World War II origins through the development of the first commercial computers. In Part 2 Vintage films and first hand accounts enliven the stories of the ENIAC and the three lines of computing machines descended from it: the Eckert-Mauchly EDVAC, BINAC and UNIVAC; Maurice Wilkes EDSAC; and John Von Neumanns IAS machines and their clones, the ILLIAC, MANIAC, etc.

February 13, 1980 Apollo Computer is incorporated in Chelmsford, MA. Apollo helped create the original work stations, small but powerful computer mostly used for engineering. In 1989, Hewlett-Packard Company acquired Apollo in a $476 million deal. February 14, 1946 John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert unveil the much-anticipated ENIAC at the University of Pennsylvania. The ENIAC calculated 5000 operations per second -- 1000 times faster than its contemporaries. Impressive in size as well as strength, the machine occupied over 1500 square feet of space, weighed 30 tons, and used 18000 vacuum tubes. February 15, 1934 Niklaus Wirth, the inventor of the programming language Pascal. Originally Pascal was intended to serve only as a tool for teaching programming. February 16, 1946 ENIAC is dedicated The formal dedication ceremony served to demonstrate the Moore School's leadership in the field of electronic digital computers and the Army's foresight in funding the project. Six weeks after the dedication ceremony, Eckert and Mauchly resigned from the Moore School. Since they were unwilling to relinquish their patent rights to the EDVAC, the Moore School felt that their association with the University had to be severed. February 19, 1971 The First Warrant is Issued to Search a Computer Storage The first warrant is issued to search a computer storage. Although the requirements for obtaining such a warrant were similar to those for searching a home, they ushered in a new era that ...

KurdistanKurdistan
Kurdistan Kurdistan .......... Main article: History of general purpose CPUs EDVAC, one of the first electronic stored program computers.Computers such as the ENIAC had to be physically rewired in order to perform different tasks, which caused these machines to be called "fixed-program computers." Since the term "CPU" is generally defined as a software (computer program) execution device, the earliest devices that could rightly be called CPUs came with the advent of the stored-program computer. The idea of a stored-program computer was already present in the design of J. Presper Eckert and John William Mauchly's ENIAC, but was initially omitted so the machine could be finished sooner. On June 30, 1945, before ENIAC was completed, mathematician John von Neumann distributed the paper entitled First Draft of a Report on the EDVAC. It outlined the design of a stored-program computer that would eventually be completed in August 1949.[2] EDVAC was designed to perform a certain number of instructions (or operations) of various types. These instructions could be combined to create useful programs for the EDVAC to run. Significantly, the programs written for EDVAC were stored in high-speed computer memory rather than specified by the physical wiring of the computer. This overcame a severe limitation of ENIAC, which was the considerable time and effort required to reconfigure the computer to perform a new task. With von Neumann's design, the program, or software, that EDVAC ran ...
