 | Beagle Freedom Project - Second Rescue - June 8, 2011 Our second rescue from beagles who have lived their entire lives inside a research laboratory. These beagles have known nothing except the confines of metal cages. They have known no soft human touch, no warm bed, no companionship, no love. They have never been outside or sniffed a tree or grass. Finally, after years of being poked and prodded, these beagles are FREE! ARME got the call that a facility was willing to release them to us after they had been used in several tests. We picked them up on June 8th and now they are all in loving foster homes, and one has already been adopted.  | Beagle Freedom Project - Our First Rescue On December 23, 2010, ARME rescued two Beagles from a medical testing laboratory. These dogs had never seen the outdoors, walked on grass or felt a gentle touch. We captured their first steps into a kind world. They had also been de-barked and fed only "laboratory chow."  | Beagle Freedom Project: Rescue #6 Beagles are the most popular breed for lab use because of their friendly, docile, trusting, forgiving, people-pleasing personalities. The research industry says they adapt well to living in a cage, and are inexpensive to feed. Research beagles are usually obtained directly from commercial breeders who specifically breed dogs to sell to scientific institutions. Testing done on beagles in university and other research facilities includes medical/pharmaceutical, household products and cosmetics. When they are no longer wanted for research purposes, some labs attempt to find homes for adoptable, healthy beagles. Working directly with these labs, Beagle Freedom Project is able to remove and transport beagles to place them in loving homes. It is used to wage wars to free people, to mark differences between cultures and religions to defend policies, to herald the free market and the related idea of freedom to consume. On the 30th March 2011 Marion Bloem invited poets, translators, writers and artists from all over the world to volunteer translating her poem. One month later 30 translations were available. And there are still new people and translators from all over the world joining the Freedom Project each day. People who use their network to inspire friends to contribute to this project. Many stories are to be told. Some poets live far away from the city, out of reach, and have no computer, no internet. The intention is to continue finding translators to pass on the awareness about the fragility of the concept Freedom. The poem "Vrijheid" was made by Marion Bloem, more than ten years ago. The poem was selected by 'the Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 mei' and a video clip was made and broadcasted several times a day during one month on Dutch television.
