![]() | Free as in Freedom: The Free Software Foundation Ever since we interviewed John Sullivan, Campaigns Manager for The Free Software Foundation in Boston, our heads have been spinning with the possibilities that 'Free as in Freedom' Software holds. If you're looking at this on the web, you'll see that our site is a pimped out Wordpress blog- a free and open blogging platform. There are lots of crazy thumbnails and video playing plug-ins that we've helped to build through our collaborative Show-In-A-Box project. All of this is possible because of Free and Open Software. Free is the idea (and the reality) that people should have the right to use their software in any way they see fit. Modifications, hacks, customizations and copies-lots of copies- should be allowed. If you're using any operating system besides GNU-Linux (this would be Mac and Windows and a huge percentage of the population) and proprietary software made by these companies and many others, you literally don't have the right to change, copy or distribute any of it. That CD you made your friend of that cheesy FTP program? Nope, that's totally illegal. Unless of course it's Free Software (like my favorite FTP app, Cyberduck), then it's wholly encouraged for you to share and even open up the code and modify it and share it some more. We love free software because as people with big imaginations and some techy, smart developer friends, we can build things the way we want them rather than wait for a big corporation to build them for us. We have the Freedom to share ... 2008年06月05日再生回数 1296 |

![]() | Free Software Foundation - Windows 7 Sins Approximately twenty members of the Free Software Foundation and supporters of free open source software gathered at the entrance to Boston Common from the Public Garden Wednesday to erect a giant trash bin into which they threw representations of proprietary software like Microsoft Windows 7, Mac OS X and the iPhone. The demonstration marked the launch of their Windows 7 Sins campaign, which identifies seven negative cultural impacts of Microsoft's proprietary software ecosystem and encourages users to use free software instead. ![]() | The Free Software Foundation needs your Help Dear free software supporter, At the 2007 annual Associate Members meeting held in March at MIT in Cambridge, the FSF board and staff gathered with members from around the world to discuss our activities and the tremendous successes we have had together in the past year. We fought Digital Restrictions Management through our DefectiveByDesign.org campaign, released version 3 of the GNU General Public License to help neutralize anti-free-software laws like the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and defend against Microsoft's attempts to make free software proprietary through patent promises, released the GNU Affero GPL to support developers building network server software, supported fully free software distributions like gNewSense, backed high-priority software development projects like the free Flash player Gnash, and saw the continued success of our campaign to lift the "Java trap" with Sun's ongoing release of the Java platform under the GPL. Finally, following on from our discussion at the beginning of 2007 with major manufacturers and our release of the white paper, "Hardware Free From Restrictions," general-purpose computers are now available from major retailers with free software preloaded. But we weren't just looking backward. We also discussed the many challenges facing the free software movement, and what our priorities should be in 2008 to ensure everyone's ability to run a completely free operating system. The major issue we isolated is the threat of software ... 2007年12月13日再生回数 5521 |
![]() | The Free Software Foundation Writes Open Letter To Google / Youtube Asking them To Give Away VP8. Only a few days ago Google bought out company "On2" a long with their high compression VP8 Video codec. The Free Software Foundation has now written a letter to Google pleading with them to release their VP8 Video Codec tot he world as free / open source software with out patents. If google does not do this then it is possible that the H.264 Video codec could become the new standard for web video compression. If this takes place then all web video sites will have to pay royalties and it's possible that open source web browsers would have to pay royalties to support the new web standard as well. It's very possible that Google was planing on releasing this technology to the world before they even bought the company out, but as of right now all we can do is wait and see. ![]() | (Re)introducing the Free Software Foundation As of 2011, the Free Software Foundation is in its 26th year. John Sullivan was just named its new executive director in March, but has been with the FSF since 2003. Originally, the FSF's primary role was to develop and distribute free software. Much has changed in 26 years, as many others have joined the movement and started developing free software, and the FSF has evolved to take more of a leadership and steward role. John will give an overview of how the FSF works nowadays, what its current projects and campaigns are, and how people can get involved.
