 | Rare Tesselata Eels (Gymnothorax favagineus) This eel arrived at Southern California-based Blue Zoo Aquatics in January 2009. While it is not terribly unusual to see tesselata eels in the marine aquarium hobby, the 11-inch long one that showed up at Blue Zoo today is anything but usual. This is an ultra-rare white tesselata eel, says Mark Martin, director of marine ornamental research at Blue Zoo. We have never seen this color variant—white with small black spots. All other tesselata eels weve seen are black with white markings. The name "tesselata eel" is commonly used in Australia and Papua New Guinea for the animal known to marine scientists as Gymnothorax favagineus.  | ever see a moray eel (gymnothorax tile) eat? they are quite voracious eaters. this is our new aquarium resident, Morey. he loves krill, but has very poor vision so has to sniff them out. but he sure does love to eat. the gymnothorax tile is sold as a "freshwater eel", but they really need brackish water as they mature, so he'll be getting his own tank soon. he's so totally worth it. from wikipedia: "Moray eels' heads are too narrow to create the negative pressure that most fish use to swallow prey. Moray eels have a second set of jaws in their throat called pharyngeal jaws, which also possess teeth. When feeding, morays launch these jaws into the oral cavity, where they grasp struggling prey and transport it into the throat and down to the rest of the digestive system. Moray eels are the only known type of animal that uses pharyngeal jaws to actively capture and restrain prey.
