This time, the Wall Street Journal discovered that many Facebook game applications were passing along personally identifying information to other sites and advertising companies. This is a breach of Facebook's Terms. Rather odd, when it's such large game companies like Zynga? However, turns out this identifying information is simply our Facebook profile IDs which can be found in the address bar by anyone, anytime regardless of how you have your privacy settings configured. Even if you have your username secured, anyone can easily go to this site graph.facebook.com (and replace the x's with a username) to get your unique ID number. The backlash is because data that is getting tracked by other means - eg game playing activity - is then being matched with user IDs and so now the social graph is no longer anonymous but personally identified to individuals. Thing is, as Michael Arrington correctly points out in his post, our behavior online is constantly being tracked and sold/transmitted to advertisers in order to serve more targeted ads...
