I recommend this network hierarchy as seen from the backbone level: 'Router-Switch-Router-customer' device. This is an ethernet-only lab setup, which is using OSPF and BGP as routing protocols. Some ISPs offer Ethernet services to the customer, so the first device after the CPE demarcation line is a L2-switch or an end device. Frame relay and PPP labs must be done as virtual templates in this environment instead of doing it on real interfaces (sick! *g*).
