 | MIPS: Risking It All on RISC [Recorded: July 27, 2011] Stanford University President John Hennessy and MIPS colleagues Bob Miller, Skip Stritter and Joe DiNucci will discuss the story of MIPS, a groundbreaking company in the computer industry. In 1981, Hennessy led the Stanford research team that developed a Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) microprocessor that had the potential to dramatically increase performance and reduce costs. Then in 1984, Hennessy joined Skip Stritter and John Mousourris to co-found MIPS Computer Systems to take on the daunting task of bringing a RISC microprocessor to market. Today called MIPS Technologies, it was the world's first commercial RISC chip company and one of the first semiconductor companies who rely on partners to fabricate their chips. The final radical touch: MIPS was a UNIX-based microprocessor, deeply influenced by the needs of the operating system and compilers. Hennessy and team were not just taking on huge hardware and software challenges; they were also taking on Intel, which by then had the dominant market position with its flagship processor family. MIPS became one of the primary enablers of the explosive growth of the workstation market in the late 1980s. Silicon Graphics used powerful MIPS processors in its graphic servers and workstations. Moviegoers saw the results in a new generation of visually stunning blockbusters, including Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Toy Story.  | MIPS Technologies shows off $99 Android 4.0 tablet - EE Times - MWC www.EETimes.com MIPS Technologies, which makes the processors that power appliances like TVs and DTV boxes has come out with its own $99 tablet running Google's Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The 7-inch tablet, made by Ainovo sports a 1GHz single core processor and a 444MHz Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). The JZ4770 processor, based on XBurst technology, is MIPS32, 65 nanometer architecture and is capable of both 2D and 3D video in 1080p, with a power consumption of less than 250mW. The tablet boasts both front and rear cameras and also includes support for WiFi 802.11 b USB 2.0, HDMI 1.3 and microSD. Even better is another tablet on the MIPS booth being subsidized and sold into the Indonesian market. After the big surge in January, it formed a wedge that popped, formed another wedge that popped, it then stalled at the resistance level for a few days, flagged, and then moved up steadily from the 2.45 range all the way up to 3.27. At this point, it's very likely that it will make a run up to the 4.00 range short-term. http Cheniere Energy, Inc. (LNG) continues to look good, up 61 cents to 17.60, or 3.6%, on 14.7 million shares traded. This stock has been in a rising channel since January, and has gone from 8.00 all the way up 18.01.
