Xevious Fardraut Saga - MSX2 - Namco - 1988 - fly through (MSX-AUDIO)Xevious Fardraut Saga - MSX2 - Namco - 1988 - fly through (MSX-AUDIO)
A full run of Namco's Xevious Fardraut Saga, Scramble mode. It's one of the few games that support MSX-AUDIO, which I also show in this video. Unfortunately, although it is even used for most sound effects, the music created with it is very boring. The game itself is also very boring and very, very, very tough. I'm glad I could use the reverse feature of openMSX... (rerecord count: 384). 16 long areas await you... try to keep it up... Recorded with openMSX.

hastily made DQ vs FF (MSX) sound comparisonhastily made DQ vs FF (MSX) sound comparison
Captured with bluemsx as I played through. Thats why you hear sfx too. someone said Final Fantasy music isn't as technical/complex as Dragon Quest due to Sugiyama (DQ)'s classical background VS Uematsu (FF)'s self taught background. Uematsu is the "pop music" of game music? Pfsht. No. I call shenanigans. While DQ series has great, complex, layered music, SO DOES FF. It is equally elaborate. The only true difference is FF having an FM advantage due to being released AFTER FM came out for it, and the same goes for NES. FF came later and as a result , better tricks were able to be done for sound/instrumentation. long story short, saying FF music will never be as complex as DQ, is stupid.

Eggbert - MSX2 - Fony - 1994Eggbert - MSX2 - Fony - 1994
The actual Eggbert game, by Fony. An MSX2 game released in 1994 after 4 years of work... The music is both MSX-MUSIC and MSX-AUDIO, sound effects are ADPCM samples, played via the MSX-AUDIO. I remember I saw the game demonstrated on several Tilburg MSX fairs around that time. It's an excellent puzzle game. Good music (although it gets a bit repetitive), very good sound effects, great graphics and smooth game play with funny animations. It's a bit unforgiving though, if you make a mistake you're usually dead meat and the levels are getting more difficult quickly. The video shows the intro demo, the practice levels and a few levels of stage 1. If I get reactions or requests, I'll post a few more videos with more levels (and other stages with different graphics). The version of the game that was used for this video (apparently version 2.0) is the one that can be found on the MCCM issue 90 cd, released in 1997. This game was ported to Game Boy Color in 2001, under the name of Toki Tori, created by Two Tribes (founded by two former Fony members). It was also released for the Wii in 2008 and for the iPhone in 2009 under the same name. The Two Tribes site says it's also available for PC and Mac. NOP - Unknown RealityNOP - Unknown Reality
This is a video of Unknown Reality. A megademo for MSX2 released by NOP in 1994 on 3 diskettes. The demo requires 256 kB RAM and 128 kB VRAM. Audio is provided by MSX-MUSIC (such as Panasonic FM-PAC) and MSX-AUDIO (such as Philips Music Module). It contains 3 demo parts which play only a sample. This sample is 256 kB and is loaded in an MSX-AUDIO cartridge containing 256 kB sample RAM. It can be installed on harddisk, which in order increases the memory requirement from 256 kB to 512 kB, since MSX-DOS2 requires some memory for itself as well. This video was recorded with openMSX, running Philips NMS 8250 with 512 kB RAM, Panasonic FM-PAC and a Philips Music Module containing 256 kB sample RAM encapsulated in the mbstereo extension and Sunrise IDE interface to run the demo from harddisk. As the demo switches between 50 Hz and 60 Hz interrupt, the video is split up into 16 base video files. In order to create one big video file from all these files involved need to be saved with the same frame rate and merged into one file. Details on how I did this will be available soon. Remark: It seems the NOP logo and the multi-colour pictures didn't turn out the way they should be. To get the multi-colour effect, 2 pictures interchange quickly. Also some other demo parts aren't as they should look. Unfortunately while processing it, the video seems to be downsampled to around 30 fps or so.

The Columns/Tetris/[other falling bricks game] clone by Compjoetania The Next Generation, released at the Bussum MSX fair on 18 September 1999 (originally planned for the Tilburg fair in the same year). It came on a blue disk with full-color label and was priced 15 NLG / 270BEF / 7 Euro... Skip to 1:03 to miss the huge blackness during loading... see below. This gamplay demo run was made by the author himself: David Heremans (also founder of the openMSX project). Full credits at the end of the video. This postponed edition has some extra musics in it and experimental code for soundFX on MoonSound. The loading time is quite long, and includes 15 seconds to convert the original ADPCM samples (for MSX-AUDIO) to PCM samples for the MoonSound on the 3.5MHz Z80 CPU of the MSX2. Some more info from the manual: Purpose of the game: Get your name in the high score table. How long can you resist the ever increasing pressure? Game menu: To control the difficulty, you can influence some parts of the game play in the menu. Type: easy, normal, hard, insane This determines the number of new blocks that will appear at the bottom of the screen. The harder the level, the more gaps there will be.
