![]() | The Box Tops - "The Letter" (1967) The Box Tops were a Memphis rock group of the second half of the 1960s. They are best known for the hits "The Letter," "Neon Rainbow," "Soul Deep," "I Met Her in Church," and "Cry Like A Baby," and are considered a major blue-eyed soul group of the period. They performed a mixture of current soul music songs by artists such as James and Bobby Purify and Clifford Curry, pop tunes such as "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Keith Reid, Gary Brooker and Matthew Fisher of Procol Harum, and songs written by their producers, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, and Chips Moman. Vocalist Alex Chilton went on to front the powerpop band Big Star and to launch a career as a solo artist, during which he occasionally performed songs he had sung with the Box Tops. The Box Tops' music combined elements of soul music and light pop. Their records are prime examples of the styles made popular by Moman and Penn at American Sound Studio in Memphis. Many of their lesser known Top 40 hits are considered minor classics; these include "Neon Rainbow"; "Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March"; and "I Met Her in Church." As rock critic Lester Bangs wrote in a review of the group's Super Hits album, "A song like 'Soul Deep' is obvious enough, a patented commercial sound, yet within these strictures it communicates with a depth and sincerity of feeling that holds the attention and brings you back often." The Box Tops began as The Devilles, who had started playing in Memphis in 1963. As the band's personnel changed from ... 2010年08月18日再生回数 19564 |
![]() | Can I Get A Role Model by The Dangerous Idiots Aaron Sarlo was born in Chicago and began playing guitar at thirteen, started writing his own songs by fifteen and began writing his first complete album at sixteen. Sarlo formed his first band in high school, which went on to become Techno-Squid Eats Parliament -- with Clay Bell, Mark Pearrow and Shayne Gray. Techno-Squid Eats Parliament's first show was in the Spectrum Weekly Musicians Showcase, judged by industry legends Jody Stephens, Jim Dickinson, and John Fry. Techno-Squid won first place that evening, and, shortly after, signed to Ardent Records. Techno-Squid Eats Parliament recorded their only album at Ardent Studios, produced by John Hampton, and based on Sarlo's many (and very hard to come by) home recordings of songs written by Bell and himself. Techno-Squid toured extensively in support of the record, playing with national acts such as Alex Chilton, Cheap Trick, and Cracker. Techno-Squid disbanded in 1995, but not before being featured on MTV's "120 Minutes" and MTV Canada, appearing in Billboard Magazine and playing South By Southwest and North By Northeast. They then went on to have their eponymous album re-released by Philips Multimedia as one of the world's first Audio-Visual CD-ROMs, featuring the complete record as well as band videos, photos, and other behind-the-scenes fanfare. In 1996, Sarlo relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, and formed the indie/cult band, Slept, with Chris O'Brien (of The Riot Tapes) and Phillip Ouellette. Slept toured the US east ... 2011年07月06日再生回数 2116 |
![]() | The Replacements - Alex Chilton (infamous music video version) This ain't no Rock Band 2 version. This 1987 video is just one of many reasons why we love the Replacements. Their 1985 major label contract required them to create videos to promote their albums. This, a band who came out with the sarcastic song "Seen Your Video" less than a year before. Snotty, irreverent, and stupid? Absolutely. This is rock & roll after all -- and the music industry we're talking about. So their videos were a big middle finger to it all. From MTV 2 and the album "Pleased to Meet Me", a late entry in their series of anti-establishment videos. (RIP Alex Chilton.) Curiously enough, this video is almost identical to one for another song from the album, "The Ledge," except it includes added cuts to make it longer. (MTV banned the video for The Ledge due to its lyrical references to suicide.) 2010年05月20日再生回数 39 |
