 | WAMPAS Baby Stars of 1931 with Ernestine Schumann-Heink The WAMPAS Baby Stars promotional campaign was sponsored by the Western Association of Motion Picture Advertisers to give a career boost to actresses whom the association felt were destined for stardom. Sometimes the hype helped, sometimes it didn't. Here we have the WAMPAS selection for 1931...and what a disorganized lot they are! It doesn't appear as though much rehearsal time went into this. Madame Ernestine Schumann-Heink suddenly draws a blank and asks "That all?" Rochelle Hudson awaits her cue, until the director calls out "Rochelle, you're next!" Anita Louise lets her smile drop fast once she thinks she's out of camera range; as does Marion Shilling (listed on the video as "Schilling" -- her real name). Maybe that's why the two of them were given a second chance to display their practiced jubilation at the end. And why the heck was American actress Judith Wood speaking with a pseudo British accent when she suggested Schumann-Heink should be made the fourteenth baby star??? All in all great fun to watch.
