	Tech : NeXT Cube Demo  www.Alfred.TV READ ME FIRST In this video, with a run time of 53 minutes, I give a cursory overview of the hardware and operating system centric to the NeXT Computer. When Steve Jobs was stripped of all managerial rights at Apple in 1985, he resigned and started NeXT. In the mid 90's, when Apple was in dire straights for a modern, multitasking operating system, they looked to purchase Be for their BeOS. When that deal fell through, they negotiated with NeXT. With the purchase, which was for about $500 million, not only did they get the NextStep/OpenStep OS, they also got back Steve Jobs. The acquisition of NeXT, which was orchestrated by the current Apple CEO, Gil Amelio, saved the company from pending disaster. So, join me for a some time-travel to 1990, where I will give you a peek at the roots of the modern Mac OS X operating system which many of us enjoy and use today. Note: The REASON why this was filmed early on Thanksgiving more was due to my personal and business schedule. 	Burning a NeXTcube  For a long time now, I've had a non-functional NeXTcube sitting in my cubicle. Since I'm changing jobs, I asked my boss what I should do with it. His response was that we should burn it (since the cases of NeXTcubes are made out of magnesium). I'd read Simson Garfinkel's attempt to burn a NeXTcube, so I pointed out that they're harder to light that one might think. And then he pointed me to a link on how to make thermite. I was helping my friend out to show it runs and all that... the cube is like 20 years old and totally a piece of history. First Web Server EVER ran on one and without the NeXT OS developed for the cube first, there would not be any Mac OS X (it's just another BSD Unix version with an Aqua interface we all know that - and this way Steve Jobs liked it and so it was adopted to NeXT and then Apple again). My friend wanted to sell all this NeXt stuff he got from his Ex - LOL **MAJOR** drama. THAT guy tho (his ex) is like the super-uber-geek just from what he all left behind for Josh. I tried to talk Josh out of the cube ('cos he also had a NeXTstation / slab he could sell) but I didn't have that kind of $$ to spend. 	Peter Urban of Smibs.com unwraps his first NeXT Cube  I am interested in the history of technology and I have a soft spot for the machines that became milestones in the history of computing. Recently, I had the opportunity to get an early NeXT Cube, the same computer that Tim Berners-Lee used to invent the World Wide Web! NeXT also happens to be the company that Steve Jobs founded after he got kicked out of Apple Computers. Although, for the longest time, it looked like NeXT would fail, it eventually sold to Apple to delivering the technology to develop the now very popular Mac OS X and bringing back its legendary founder as CEO.
