DEC's PC Challenge 1982DEC's PC Challenge 1982
[Recorded: 1982] This corporate documentary produced by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) chronicles DECs two year odyssey to bring three personal computers, the Professional 325 (PRO-325), the Professional 350 (PRO-350), and the Rainbow 100 to market a year after IBM launched their personal computer. DEC's strategy was driven by the fear was that if they did not immediately create a successful product that the Japanese who were already producing low cost IBM PC compatibles would capture the market. The narrative follows the challenges of the CT Program Group - Avram Miller (project manager), Michael Weinstein (merchandising), Ron Ham (software), Art Williams (hardware), and Vah Erdekian (manufacturing), as they race to develop a personal computer to show at the June 1982 National Computer Conference in Houston, Texas. This film traces the project from its conception through the design and manufacturing process and documents the intellectual and engineering challenges inherent in creating a new technology product. Gordon Bell sums up this challenge when he says, What we are trying to do with computers is to make a machine that is in fact so good that it can be an intellectual companion with humans. DEC's goal was to build from scratch a personal computer business that would create over 120000 personal computer small systems the first year of production, and that by 1985 would be worth $3.5 billion. Digital Equipment Corporation was founded in 1957 by Ken Olsen and ...

AI History: Minsky Tentacle ArmAI History: Minsky Tentacle Arm
This film from 1968 shows Marvin Minsky's tentacle arm, developed at the MIT AI Lab (one of CSAIL's forerunner labs). The arm had twelve joints and could be controlled by a PDP-6 computer or via a joystick. This video demonstrates that the arm was strong enough to lift a person, yet gentle enough to embrace a child.

Gordon Bell and MyLifeBitsGordon Bell and MyLifeBits
The advent of personal computing devices such as PCs and smart phones with terabyte storage has enable the capture, recording and recall of everything a person reads, writes and hears. These are the new records and artifacts of the 21st century digital person. Since 1998 Gordon Bell of Microsoft Research has worked on MyLifeBits, a system to digitally store everything in a person's life, including accumulated and current articles, books, correspondence, financial and legal records, memorabilia, photos, telephone calls, time-lapse photos, video and web pages. MyLifeBits is both an experiment in lifetime storage and a software research effort. For archivists, exponentially increasing amounts of personal digital artifacts will soon arrive seeking immortality at the portals of museums and libraries, providing a new challenge to institutions accustomed to dealing with an analog person's boxes of papers and memorabilia of past millennia. Organizing, retrieving, preserving and protecting these fleeting, bit-based artifacts over the long-term is the contemporary archivist's greatest challenge. Bell's talk touched on the project's history and discussed the research challenges and the wide-ranging social and personal benefits of the MyLifeBits technology, especially as it pertains to cultural memory institutions. Speaker Biography: Gordon Bell spent 23 years (1960-1983) at Digital Equipment Corporation as Vice President of Research and Development, where he was responsible for ...

Hear! Here! Computer Speech RecognitionHear! Here! Computer Speech Recognition
[Recorded: Autumn, 1968] Today, its becoming common for computers to understand and react to our voice commands. From ubiquitous customer support voice response systems to personal cell phones, computers are now literally doing what we tell them. This level of computer speech recognition was not an overnight development. In fact, designing and programming computer systems to understand human speech is a challenge that has been pursued for decades. This historical film, produced by the Stanford University Artificial Intelligence Lab (SAIL) in 1969 discusses and demonstrates the challenges and progress made in their speech recognition project. The film first shows a computer learning to recognize phrases and speech patterns. Next, a computer hand-eye system is shown being controlled through voice commands. Commands as complicated as "Pick up the small block in the lower left-hand corner", are recognized and the tasks are carried out by the computer controlled arm. This film made available to the Computer History Museum courtesy of Stanford University.

PDP PC150 150mm (6") Diamond Wall ChaserPDP PC150 150mm (6") Diamond Wall Chaser
www.toolstop.co.uk The PC150 wall chaser is light, easy-to-handle machine. When used in conjunction with the PV25 extractor the dust control is exceptionally good. Due to the way in which the blades are mounted adjusting the blade seperation can be done without removing the blades and the channel width is variable from 12mm to an impressive 45mm. furthermore, the maximum cutting depth is a useful 45mm. The powerful motor with feedback electronic speed stabilization means the speed remains constant, regardless of the load.

Tama Superstar Hyper Drive double bass sound checkTama Superstar Hyper Drive double bass sound check
I just got this set up and I am not warmed up and just messing around with set-up and still have some bugs to work out yet. 20x 22" bass drums 12,13,14 rack toms 16 floor tom 6,8,10 roto toms. and a PDP 6 x 10 popcorn effects side snare. Speed cobra hi hat stand and Speed cobra bass pedals. Mostly Sabain XS20 cymbals and a few B8 pro and a Wuhan china. I really like the sound of the shallow toms and deep bass drums, all stock heads bass drums dampened with pillows and toms with moongels. just got in my Evans G2 clear and G1 clear for resos on toms in and will put on soon. This was recorded with a digital camera and internal mic used, I know its not the best sound.

PDP pad review 6 button face pad, xbox 360PDP pad review 6 button face pad, xbox 360
PDP pad, is a 6 button face pad for the xbox 360. Would rather have ad pad then the micro switch/stick thing. I've had it for 3 days and it's still hard to get the more complex motions during combos out 100% of the time. Maybe i have to spend some weeks on it (i am hoping so). I feel i have to do motions harder than usual to make it work. Especially for some reason down left. It's like i have to hold the pad a little more inward than usual. And it may be because of the size of the left part of the pad. Again i can get used to all this stuff i am thinking. Also, 3 days and the letters on my buttons are starting to wear off. XY and A are completely gone, the rest are on their way. Not that big of a deal but for button reconfigs at tournaments or a friends house in the future may be a bit more time consuming than usual. But on the plus side the buttons are really good quality, really responsive. I like the size of it, and it feels good in your hands, light in weight but sturdy in material. This is a very good alternative for xbox owners who are tired of their Madcatz fightpads breaking. The start and select buttons are behind the cord up top so NO never a friend pressing them because they are mashing. Man why can't companies just remake the japanese sega saturn pads ' _';
