Still, it's hard to fault the interior spaciousness plus a 4-cylinder, 2-liter engine that, with a turbocharger, produces 200 hp. And I, for one, approve of the styling, especially from the front. Prices start at $22950 for the Value Edition with 6-speed manual, $24025 for the optional 6-speed auto. Warranty 4-yrs, 50000 mi./5 yrs, 60000 mi. powertrain. First Glance: Right at home in the city of Boston Before discussing the 2006 Passat I'd like to offer my impressions of Boston, where this test was performed. An "insider" went to the German press and claimed the whole company was a hotbed of sex, bribery, corruption, hookers and champagne-fuelled orgies on private jets. It all sounded a bit far-fetched to be honest, the notion that the makers of the Golf diesel, with its sensible seats and big boot, could be a corporate version of the mafia. But blow me down. Heads have begun to roll. Executives have started to resign. This is extraordinary — Volkswagen is more powerful than half the world's countries. It owns Audi, Seat, Skoda and Bentley and employs 340000 people. It makes 5m cars and turns over £60 billion every year. And it's run by my old friend Burnt Fish Trousers, who's a model of decency, dignity and good old-fashioned manners. Yet the essence of the story, so far as I can tell, is that trade union leaders, who in Germany have a great deal of power, have allegedly been flown round the world on company jets and given £20000 company vouchers that they can use to pay for exotic escort girls and lap dancers. And then, in return, the Red Robboes are supposed to let the company reform its expensive labour policy. Frankly, I can't see what's wrong with that. If Mrs Thatcher had put Arthur Scargill on a private jet full of naked Vietnamese girls, an awful lot of stone throwing and angst would surely have been avoided. The suspension set-up gives an excellent ride and makes it comfortable on long journeys. Models with 'sport' suspension (lowered by 15mm, larger wheels) trade some of this comfort to improve the handling; they offer impressive body control and fine, composed handling, though the standard car is capable, too. Most Passats are sold with one of VW's TDI diesel engines - 1.9-litre or 2.0-litre in 138bhp or 168bhp guise - and while they're not the quietest or most linear units around, with rather jerky power delivery, they're effortless on motorways and provide impressive acceleration. A sophisticated edge is provided by the electronic handbrake, as fitted to the Phaeton luxury car. Marketplace: On paper, the sixth-generation Passat range seems a traditional mix of saloon and estate models. But you couldn't describe it as old-fashioned, and the looks are a case in point. It appears more upmarket than every sector rival, and thanks to cues such as the chrome grille and circular LED rear lights taken from the firm's flagship Phaeton saloon, it's both stylish and distinctive. This upmarket appearance is reflected in the Passat's marketing; it's seen as a rival to lower-end BMW 3-Series and Audi A4s, and distanced from more mainstream competition such as the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Vectra. The Passat offers excellent handling, very comfortable quiet ride, good-quality classy interior and variety of available engines. On the downside, the Passat is expensive to keep and reliability is questionable. Available as front- or all-wheel drive (4Motion), the 1998-2005 Volkswagen Passat shares its platform with Audi A4. The Passat has longitudinally-mounted engine and comes with manual or automatic transmission. The Passat's main engine choices are the 4-cylinder 1.8L-turbo and the 2.8L V6. Also available are the strong 270-hp 4.0L W8 (8-cylinder W-shape) engine and the economical 2.0L TDI Turbo Diesel (on models from 2004). The Passat has disk brakes on all wheels. The ABS is standard; traction control (ASR) is available. Inside, the Passat offers distinctive European styling with plenty of room and high level of comfort. Fit and finish is very good and all interior materials have a quality look and feel. On the road, Volkswagen Passat has very comfortable ride and excellent handling. Even under hard acceleration, there is almost no torque steer, thanks to drivetrain layout and front suspension design. The 2.8L V6 engine is smooth and fairly quiet.
