![]() | Single Queen of Paper Wasp Making Two Nests As posted in the previous episode (check out the video response), a founding queen of yellow paper wasp (Polistes rothneyi, family Vespidae) on the nest S9 had been painted in sky-blue. Three days later, the marked foundress was found sitting on the smaller nest S10 (5 cells). Several hours later, I saw her working on the neighbouring nest S9 (9 cells). I used a small hand mirror to confirm the sky-blue marks on her back. The two nests were 30 cm apart under the eaves and both contained some eggs. No other paper wasps (which were unmarked) had been spotted under the eaves in those days. Thus I could get a convincing evidence that the two embryo nests were made by one and the same queen. Early-May 2010 in Japan. This footage is the Yellow Paper Wasp Diaries - Season 3, Episode 3. It's quite unusual for a solitary foundress of Japanese Polistes paper wasps to maintain two nests simultaneously. But this is the second case I've ever encountered here. ![]() | Parasitic Moth Emerged from Paper Wasp's Nest I collected a fully-grown nest of paper wasp (Polistes snelleni, family Vespidae) after the all reproductive members (males and new queens) had long gone on late-November, 2010. I had monitored the development of this colony since early-August (check out the video response). The unnatural pink dots all over the nest comb were marked when I counted the number of cells (= 141). The nest had grown in a quite irregular shape due to the surrounding obstacles and the confined space under the eaves. After inspection, the nest specimen was put into a showcase (without a mothball!), which was sealed and then kept at room temperature. Three months later, an adult micromoth (Anatrachyntis sp., family Cosmopterigidae) emerged from the host nest unseasonably. It was totally unexpected for me because the host nest had shown no signs of infestation. The moth was supposed to overwinter in the pupal form hidden in the vacant host nest. The compound eyes of a cosmopterigid live specimen are usually bright red. Filmed on late-Feburary 2011 in Japan. picasaweb.google.com This tiny parasitic moth looks like the same species as the ones obtained from other host nests of Polistes rothneyi (visit www.youtube.com ). ![]() | Parasitic Moth Larva Fallen from Paper Wasp Nest The nest-S9 of yellow paper wasp (Polistes rothneyi, family Vespidae) was collapsed and abandoned due to the heavy infestation of parasitic moths. The collected nest specimen had been put into quarantine since late-September 2010 and reared at room temperature. Five months later, a caterpillar was found crawling at a loss on the floor. It might be a late-instar larva of parasitic moth (Anatrachyntis sp., family Cosmopterigidae). (To see the early-instar larvae, check out my previous video clip; www.youtube.com .) Somehow, the caterpillar couldn't get back to the host nest by itself. Even after being put back to the nest by tweezers, it couldn't stay there and soon fell to the floor again. As you can see in this footage, the infested host nest was falling apart into pieces and covered with cobwebs spun by the parasitic moth caterpillars. There was also a dead wasp stuck in a cell. It was 16 degrees Celsius when filmed on late-February 2011 in Japan. This footage is a new episode of my longrun video series "Yellow Paper Wasp Diaries Season 3". ![]() | Why My Paper Wasp Queen Starts Unusual Multiple Nests? The marked foundress of yellow paper wasp (Polistes rothneyi, family Vespidae) was guarding her embryo nest-S9 (22 cells). You can see her satellite nest-S10 (11 cells), too. The two nests were 30 cm apart under the eaves. Primordial (or incomplete) petioles were also found in the adjacent sectors S11 and S12. But the queen seemed to have quit further construction there. It is noteworthy that all of the four nests were located on the same position (coordinates) inside each of the consecutive rectangular sectors. In other words, the nests S9-12 were equally spaced in a straight line. The precise alignment cannot be coincidence. If other queen(s) had taken part in the independent foundings followed by violent usurpation, the nest locations would have been more random. An embryo nest is quite vulnerable to natural enemies and parasitism. It is hard for a single queen to guard her nest during the solitary (pre-emergence) stage. Just as you shouldn't invest all your money into one stock, it may be wise (beneficial) for a foundress to have a satellite nest(s) to ensure the success of her dynasty (colony). However, I'm afraid that this plausible risk-hedge hypothesis could be just an afterthought. The last possibility (and my favourite hypothesis) is that the single queen wasp made multiple nests simultaneously as a result of her misconception of the nesting site. Late-May 2010 in Japan. Founding queen of the yellow paper wasp (Polistes rothneyi, family Vespidae) on her nest (9 cells with eggs). So far, no other nests were made under the eaves this year. Early-May 2009 in Japan.
Founding queen of the yellow paper wasp (Polistes rothneyi, family Vespidae) guarding her nest (31 cells). Late-May 2009 in Japan. You can see droplets of honey stored in some cells. Soundtrack (audioswapped): "Honey" by Doveman
![]() | Yellow Paper Wasp Diary Season2 Ep03 Antennal Drumming キアシナガバチの母子間伝達♪ Founding queen of the yellow paper wasp (Polistes rothneyi, family Vespidae) on the nest (35 cells) feeding her larvae a flesh pellet. After the mealtime, the foundress drank nutrient-rich larval saliva (trophallaxis). You can hear faint drumming sounds the queen made by tapping with her antennae on the cells as she inspected the cells. Headphones may be needed. Early-June 2009 in Japan.
