Each battalion has 6 single-rail missile launchers for the 10.72 m (35 ft) long missiles and a fire control radar. It can be linked to other, longer-range radar systems. Each missile is launched by 4 solid-fueled strap-on rocket boosters. After they burn out and drop away (between 3 to 5.1 seconds from launch) it fires a 5D67 liquid fueled sustainer rocket engine (for 51-150 seconds) which burns a fuel called TG-02 Samin (50% xylidine and 50% triethylamine), oxidized by an oxidizing agent called AK-27P Melange (fuming nitric acid enriched with nitrogen oxides, phosphoric acid and hydrofluoric acid)[3]. Maximum range is between 150 and 300 km (81 and 162 nmi), depending on the model[4]. The missile uses radio illumination mid-course correction to fly towards the target with a terminal semi active radar homing phase. Maximum target speed is around Mach 4. Together with the development of many new scientific and technical solutions for the S-200 system, AA Raspletin was attached the fundamental importance to the creation of self-homing head for the anti-aircraft guided missile. In the accepted for the armament system S-200 the anti-aircraft guided missile was for the first time equipped with homing equipment. The S-200 SA-5 GAMMON is a medium to high -altitude surface-to-air missile system. The single-stage missile has four jettisonable, wraparound solid propellant boosters, each of which is is 4.9 m long and 0.48 m in diameter with a single fin spanning 0.35 m from the booster body. The missile is 10.72 m long overall with a wing span of 2.85 m. The main body is 0.85 m in diameter and has a solid fuel dual thrust sustainer rocket motor. Each missile battalion has one 320 km range P-35M BARLOCK-B E/F-band target search and acquisition radar with an integral D-band IFF system, one 270 km range SQUARE PAIR H-band missile guidance radar, and six trainable semi-fixed single rail launchers. The missile's minimum range of 60 km is due to the booster burn time and jettison requirements, limiting the system to engagements against relatively large unmaneuverable targets at ranges up to 250 km. At the time an Ukrainian military exercise was taking place on the shores of the Black Sea. The US DoD also released a statement that it had intercepted telemetry data from a missile that had veered off course. Further, a radar station on Russia's Black Sea coast reported its airspace was penetrated by a flying object with no transponder signal. It seemed and after the investigation concluded was agreed, that the incident was the work of an overzealous Ukrainian SA-5 missile. What seems to have happened in the case of the unfortunate Russian airliner is that an SA-5 was fired at a target drone which it either missed, or was beaten to by another SA-5. At this point, the missile continued flying in what happened to be the general direction of the airliner, with an active seeker head (for some reason it did not self-destruct, as SAMs are generally supposed to if they miss their target). At length, it acquired the airliner, intercepted it and detonated on its proximity fuse, probably within 50 feet of it.
