Excellent Slovak world-class physicist, prize-winner of the awards Hlava roka 2008. He studied theoretical physics at Moscow State University leads the Research Center for Quantum Information at the Institute of Physics of Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava. He is also a professor of informatics at Masaryk University in Brno. He wrote more than 200 scientific papers - probably the most quoted Slovak scientist. He taught at Imperial College London, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, University of Ulm in Germany, in SOKEN in Japan and elsewhere. He is involved in and managing several european research projects. His specialty is quantum information theory and quantum optics. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Video Games and the Future of Learning (Jan Plass and Bruce Homer)Video Games and the Future of Learning (Jan Plass and Bruce Homer)
Google Tech Talk (more info below) June 3, 2011 Presented by Jan Plass and Bruce Homer. ABSTRACT Digital Games are pervasive, constantly evolving in their complexity and features, and are heralded by many as an agent for education reform. Arguably, digital games are also among the least understood tools in education, particularly in K-12 settings. Proponents have made a strong case for the potential of games to engage students in meaningful learning activities that are highly motivating, engaging, and fun. However, research has only slowly been able to gather evidence for the effectiveness of games for learning. In the first half of this presentation we will provide a brief summary of the case of using games for learning and will review empirical research studies we conducted over the past 15 years that investigated a variety of cognitive, social, and emotional design patterns to make games and game-like environments effective learning tools. In the second half of the talk we will discuss a series of questions and challenges related to the study of games. These issues include the design of learning mechanics and assessment mechanics for games for learning, the approaches to embedded assessment, and questions related to data mining of the rich log files of game events and user logs as well as biometric data such as posture data, EKG, GSR, and EMG that these assessments generate. Speaker Info: Jan L. Plass is Professor of Educational Communication and Technology in the ...

CMake/CPack/CTest/CDash Open Source Tools to Build Test and Deploy C++ SoftwareCMake/CPack/CTest/CDash Open Source Tools to Build Test and Deploy C++ Software
Google Tech Talk December 7, 2009 ABSTRACT CMake/CPack/CTest/CDash Open Source Tools to Build Test and Deploy C++ Software, presented by Bill Hoffman. CMake has been in development since 1999, and has been used on several large open source projects such as ITK, VTK, ParaView, VXL, Trilinos and CMake itself. Further, KDE, one of the largest OSS projects has adopted CMake, demonstrating that CMake is capable of successfully supporting complex and large software systems. Hence CMake usage is growing rapidly with thousands of daily downloads and inclusion in several Linux distributions. Unlike many build systems, CMake is designed to be used in conjunction with native build tools enabling developers to use makefiles, Kdevelop projects, Xcode projects, and even MS Visual Studio projects. A simple input language (included in a CMakeLists.txt file) is used to specify which files to build and what types of system introspection tests need to be performed to build the software. A persistent cache file is used to store the system information and avoid the need for user-defined environment variables. In addition to building software, CMake provides a testing client (CTest) that integrates with the web-based CDash testing server. This server creates dashboards that build a snapshot of the software at a given time. This is critical to cross-platform development since often a change on one platform fails to compile on another one. The testing system provides for nightly builds which use ...

Learning from StackOverflow.comLearning from StackOverflow.com
Google Tech Talk April 24, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Joel Spolsky Until recently, searching for help on highly technical programming problems has been a mess. A lot of what the search engines found was old discussions in forums, where you have a lot of wrong answers and out-of-date answers that you have to sift through yourself. You also found a lot of answers at sites that were hidden behind a pay wall, which uncloaked themselves for Google and then demanded membership fees to see the answers. StackOverflow.com is a programmer's Q&A site that launched last September to address these problems. It incorporates more modern ideas about community such as voting and public editing, and even a few ideas from game design, to create a much more successful way to get help with programming problems. In a few short months, it has grown to 14 million page views a month and reaches 3 million unique programmers every month. The lessons we've learned in creating a successful Q&A site has many implications for search which I'll share in this talk.

Google I/O 2009 - Coding for Life -- Battery Life, That Is Jeffrey Sharkey The three most important considerations for mobile applications are, in order: battery life, battery life, and battery life. After all, if the battery is dead, no one can use your application. In this session, Android engineer Jeffrey Sharkey will reveal the myriad ways -- many unexpected -- that your application can guzzle power and irritate users. You'll learn about how networking affects battery life, the right and wrong ways to use Android-specific features such as wake locks, why you can't assume that it's okay to trade memory for time, and more.
