	3GPP LTE Evolved Packet System & Application to Femtos  Abstract: The Evolved Packet System (EPS) comprises the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) specifications of the 3GPP mobile network standard, including evolved radio access network (E-UTRAN) and system architecture evolution (SAE). This talk provides an overview of the 3GPP mobile network evolution, including the following topics: from GSM over UMTS to LTE and LTE-Advanced: the roots of next generation mobile network standards; 3GPP standardization architecture: specification groups and their responsibilities; overview of the LTE/SAE system architecture; quality of service architecture; overview of E-UTRAN; outlook on LTE-Advanced and beyond; and, of course, femtocells in LTE. These general LTE-related topics as well as the specific femtocell architectural issues will pave the way for the subsequent technical presentations during the remainder of the week. Biography: Dr. Andreas Maeder received his Ph.D. in 2008 at the University of Wuerzburg, Germany. The topic of his Ph.D. thesis was on radio resource management in integrated 3GPP UMTS/HSPA systems. Since 2008, he is affiliated with NEC Laboratories Europe, where he is working on next generation mobile networks, including LTE, LTE-Advanced, IEEE 802.16m, machine-to-machine communication, and Femtocells. He is involved in EU-projects FLAVIA and BeFEMTO, and in standardization of IEEE 802.16, FemtoForum and 3GPP. Then we're going to move on to the landscape architecture and just discuss why we break our landscape into multiple systems. Here we have a slide showing a three-tier client server architecture of a typical SAP system. At the top we have the presentation server. The presentation server is any input device that we can use to control an SAP system. So here we are showing the SAP GUI. But we are not limited to just using the SAP GUI. We can use a web browser, mobile device or any other form of input you can think of. The presentation layer communicates with the application server. An application server is the brains of an SAP system. This is where all the central processing gets done. You can see here what's showing the application server isn't just one system in itself. Your application server can be made up of multiple instances of the processing system. Now the application server in turn communicates with the database layer of the three-tier architecture. The database is kept on a separate server, a separate system in itself mainly for performance reasons but also for security as well.
