Usually software and operating systems serve as the back-end in interactive installations and other computer-driven systems. Software tends to be the hidden part of the system, transparent, pretending to be nonexistent. However, we believe it is very important to reflect on software itself as its "transparency" in fact hides aesthetic, social, political biases shaping our culture. WIMP brings the operating system to the front, made visible and introduces an unexpected means of interaction. It is a given fact that software often does not work as intended. Smooth interfaces break, error messages or unwanted OS interfaces appear on screen. The moment of system failure can become very attractive as it uncovers the way the system works and gives us a chance to witness how the system itself can become a producer of aesthetic paradigms (there is a bit of a Luddite in all of us). The WIMP installation is based on exploring and playing with this kind of moment. The only visual input WIMP utilizes is the graphical user interface (GUI) of the Windows operation system. 	MMM: The Multi-Device Multi-User Multi-Editor (8 minute version)  Filmed at Xerox PARC in 1990, this video shows the MMM system developed by Steve Freeman and Eric Bier. MMM, short for the Multi-Device Multi-User Multi-Editor, is a system that allows multiple users to share a computer that has one display and one keyboard, but multiple mice. (We used to call the second mouse a "guest mouse"). Two users could be editing in the same application at the same time and the system would customize its behavior to each user. This video shows off these features in several scenes: 1. Introduction. Shows two cursors moving at once. Introduces the command menu, color menu, user home areas, rectangle editor, and text editor. 2. Claim Devices. Shows how a user can associate a cursor with himself and his preferences by clicking on his home area. 3. The MMM Editors. Shows basic editing operations, performed according to a user's preferences. For example, a rectangle is created with a color that depends on a user's preference. Shows two users moving objects at the same time. Also shows tight interaction where they pull on two corners of a rectangle at the same time. Likewise, in the text editor, one user moves some text while another user edits it. 4. 	Predictive Interaction using the Delphian Desktop  This work focuses on the design and evaluation of the Delphian Desktop, a mechanism for online spatial prediction of cursor movements in a Windows-Icons-Menus-Pointers (WIMP) environment. Interaction with WIMP-based interfaces often becomes a spatially challenging task when the physical interaction mediators are the common mouse and a high resolution, physically large display screen. These spatial challenges are especially evident in overly crowded Windows desktops. The Delphian Desktop integrates simple yet effective predictive spatial tracking and selection paradigms into ordinary WIMP environments in order to simplify and ease pointing tasks. Predictions are calculated by tracking cursor movements and estimating spatial intentions using a computationally inexpensive online algorithm based on estimating the movement direction and peak velocity.
