One of the first things you should do before you take the first picture is to select the right file format. If you are using a digital SLR, you will have more choices than if you are shooting with a more basic digital camera. The use of RAW formats has become much more widely accepted, however, there are still some photographers who do not know the difference between the two formats. And then there are those who know the difference and are strongly in favor of one or the other. The goal of this post is to explain the difference between JPEG and RAW in a way that makes sense. In fact, the video is probably the best way for you to learn about both RAW and JPEG. What is JPEG? JPEG (also known as JPG) is The Standard digital format for graphic images produced by a digital camera. The camera uses software to process a digital image in-camera and produce a usable file that can be printed or posted on the Web. The processing of the image in the camera results in a "lossy compression" that discards certain unnecessary picture information in order to produce a picture with good quality and a smaller file size. Most digital images that are printed or saved to the Internet on website like Facebook are JPEG images. What is RAW?  | Film negatives to jpegs without film scanner I have a scanner, but it's not capable of scanning film, so I searched around the internet looking for solutions. I came upon one site that mentioned getting jpgs from film negatives by using any digital camera. Intrigued and extremely skeptical, I decided to give it a shot. The results are shown in this video. For images that are difficult to color, I just use the "black & white" option and lower the blue tones. I also find messing with the color balance to help. More of these images can be found on my Flickr: www.flickr.com User comment: Hello ~ I noticed that when you clicked the auto levels function the blue tint completely disappeared! However, when I tried it on photoshop the blue tint pretty much remained present... Then I realised my problem! ~ You cut your picture out, whereas I inverted my image that contained the film sprockets. Over the past week on FroKnowsPhoto.com I have taken all the JPEG shooters reasons for not shooting RAW and turned it around into reasons why you should be shooting RAW. (There will be a full length article on RAW vs JPEG coming soon) I have done a lot of talking on this matter but now its time to do more showing. What you will see in these two videos are actual samples of RAW + JPEG that were captured at the same time going head to head. There are overexposed and underexposed images as well as the "I got it right in the camera" JPEG vs RAW corrected comparisons. I have uploaded the sample images to my flickr account. In the video I mentioned I would upload the jpeg files as they came out of the camera.
